PRESENTATIONS

[+] Chilcotin River Landslide Information Portal

Presented by

  • Michael Dykes – Geospatial Services Coordinator, GeoBC (Province of B.C.)
  • Ella Li – Geospatial Analyst, GeoBC (Province of B.C.)

The Chilcotin River Landslide Information Portal became a vital resource after the July 2024 landslide, providing real-time updates for communities, emergency planners, and decision-makers. GeoBC staff swiftly developed the portal, integrating drone imagery, LiDAR, orthophotos, and videos to support situational awareness and emergency planning. It aided provincial briefings, ensured transparent information sharing, and strengthened public trust, showcasing the Province’s commitment to data-driven emergency management and resilience-building.

[+] Maprosoft: Innovating Municipal Services with GIS and Microsoft Technologies

Presented by

  • Reno Sun – Manager of IT & GIS, Town of Qualicum Beach
  • Jason Froats – Information Systems Analyst, Town of Qualicum Beach

Discover how the Town of Qualicum Beach leverages GIS and Microsoft technologies to transform service delivery. This presentation highlights solutions like the award-winning Public Inquiry System, Development Tracker, and the Tree Removal Application. These initiatives focus on improving efficiency, enhancing citizen engagement, and fostering innovation within local government services.

[+] Transforming Big Data into Actionable Insights: A Journey in Digital Transformation

Presented by

  • Naz Ali, Senior GIS Manager, CBRE Limited
  • Jason Lin, GIS Associate, CBRE Limited

In this presentation, we’ll show how we transformed raw mobile data into actionable insights using data modeling. Starting with complex CSV files, we’ll explain our process to clean, organize, and analyze large datasets, making them accessible and easy to interpret. By creating dynamic dashboards and infographics, we’ve enabled impactful visualizations for better decision-making. We’ll discuss big data challenges and strategies, offering practical workflows and lessons learned, highlighting how digital transformation simplifies complex data.

[+] Towards NG9-1-1: BC Aggregator Trial Summary

Presented by

  • Rob Darts – Senior Manager, Application Services, E-Comm 9-1-1
  • Brittany Bourdages – GIS Analyst, ICI Society
  • Joy Sinnett – Section Head, GeoBC Atlas, Province of BC

The NG9-1-1 BC Aggregator Trial explored how GIS data aggregation can improve the flow of location data from Local Authorities to a Top-Level Aggregator. ICI Society, GeoBC, and E-Comm tested a layer-based aggregation model that addresses challenges in data coordination across multiple jurisdictions. This presentation will highlight our proposed workflows, key findings, and challenges, along with next steps to refine workflows, strengthen partnerships, and tackle data and technical obstacles to improve NG9-1-1 GIS data management.

[+] Using Photogrammetry-Derived Point Clouds in Flood Risk Assessments

Presented by

  • Ben Humphreys – GIS Analyst, Northwest Hydraulic Consultants
  • James Ellis – Geomatics Technologist, Northwest Hydraulic Consultants
  • David Cassidy – Lands Manager, Nisg̱a’a Lisims Government

NHC was commissioned by Nisg̱a’a Lisims Government to conduct a flood risk assessment. As a detailed building inventory didn’t exist, advanced photogrammetry techniques were used to create a point cloud, which was instrumental in attributing the building data used in the assessment. This presentation will cover the methodologies used, highlight the data’s application in flood risk assessments, and emphasize the critical role of precise building information in evaluating and mitigating flood risks.

[+] University Campus Navigation for All: Wayfinding at UBC

Presented by

  • Rachel Wiersma – Manager, GIS and Data Systems, University of British Columbia
  • Tom Lavery – GIS Analyst, University of British Columbia

Navigating around the 1000 acres of UBC Vancouver’s campus may look like a walk in a park, but when you’re a student in a wheelchair trying to find a powered door to the class you’re late for, it is not all that scenic. UBC’s GIS team will share the journey from the original 2003 static map application to the current web application built using FME and the ArcGIS JavaScript API.

[+] Unlocking and Diving into Spatial-enabled data Lake houses

Presented by John Galambos – Senior Programmer, City of Vancouver

The City of Vancouver is investing in an Azure Databricks-powered data lakehouse to integrate and analyze diverse datasets, from fleet locations to 311 calls. What does this mean for the GIS team? This talk explores our early work in spatial processing within Databricks, including Spark-enabled GIS tools like Esri’s GeoAnalytics Engine and visualization options. Aimed at GIS professionals and developers, we’ll share key findings, technical approaches, and a Python trick or two.

Annual prize for best presentation as voted on by peers!
